How does a tooth become infected?
Tooth infections, often called abscesses, are caused by bacteria entering the tooth's inner pulp. The inner pulp of the tooth is another term used to describe the nerves and blood supply in our teeth. Tooth decay weakens tooth structured leading to cracks / breaks and this allows bacteria to invade - leading to pus buildup and inflammation.
What causes these infections?
The number one cause of a tooth infection is untreated cavities! Bacteria breaks down sugar, creating acid that erodes enamel, eventually reaching the sensitive pulp and causing infection. Another problem that can arise is the weakened tooth can fracture or break. A chipped, cracked, or broken tooth creates an opening for bacteria to seep in and infect the pulp.
How can I avoid this?
The best thing you can do to avoid dental infections is to see your dentist regularly. By doing regular checkups cavities can be discovered and treated before they make there way into the center of your tooth and cause you pain.
